Declutter the stress away!

Following on from my post this morning about letting go, I just wanted to share this that I wrote on FB this evening…..
I had a weird thought a few hours ago. For a brief moment, I wanted to drink.
That hasn’t happened since, god, I can’t remember when – that urge to dive into a bottle and forget about reality for a few hours.
It didn’t last long, it literally passed through my brain then disappeared. Hung around long enough for me to notice, then it went. I didn’t want to drink.
A few years ago, that would have been all I needed – the brief flicker of a thought would have turned into a burning need that would have needed to be satisfied.
What prompted that thought?
I was feeling very angry and stressed out. It wasn’t a pleasant sensation. I had taken the only action I could take, there was nothing else I could do to make things better in the situation itself. The only way I could improve anything now was to change how I chose to let it affect me
So I chose to turn it to something helpful.
I had wanted to declutter under the stairs for ages. It was a disaster zone that made the kitchen look so messy I couldn’t ever get the kitchen tidy even when it was tidy. It had been really getting me down for ages!
I decided that, rather than staying angry and phoning friends and family to complain, I would take constructive action and declutter under the stairs.
So, accompanied by some 60’s music turned up pretty loud, I started pulling stuff out from under the stairs.
It has been brilliant! I have got rid of SO MUCH STUFF!! I thought I had decluttered a lot a year or so ago.
There is always more we can get rid of!
I have filled 3 recycling bags, have got a pile of stuff at the bottom of the stairs I need to get to the charity shop, have got all my LPs out and in a sensible box, near my record player, and my goodness is it a fantastic record collection! I have found a signed U2 record that, if it is genuine, may be worth a decent sum of money! The space under my stairs is now very sparse, and clean, and my stress and anger disappeared ages ago!
That brief moment of thinking about drinking surprised me, but it shouldn’t – that was always my default response to the way I felt earlier, it is bound to pop up from time to time. The change comes in how I deal with it. I noticed it, then let it go.
I don’t want to drink, I would much rather clear my stress through yoga, through breathing, through walking, through dancing, through clearing out stuff, through any number of other ways.
This was amazing sober stress relief!
